About
Perched on a grainy rock surface against a blurred, earthy background is the spectacularly colored male Splendid Fairywren (Malurus splendens). This individual is in full breeding regalia, showcasing a dazzling, almost electric sapphire-blue on the crown, nape, and mantle, set against a stark, velvety black mask and upper breast. A lighter, powder-blue patch on the upper back and throat adds further complexity to the plumage. His lower back and wings are a dark blue-grey, contrasting with a pale, buff-white belly. His slender, dark bill and cocked tail (only the base is visible) are typical of the species. This vivid coloration is strategically displayed during courtship to attract a mate, embodying the extraordinary sexual dimorphism found in the dry scrublands of Western and Central Australia.
