Mid-flight over a densely forested background, this small passerine is clearly identifiable as a male Mountain Bluebird (Sialia currucoides). The bird is a stunning spectacle of ethereal blue, with the intensity of the coloration varying across its body. The head and back are a deep, nearly indigo hue, transitioning to a brighter cerulean or sky blue on the wings and tail, which are beautifully fanned out mid-stroke. The underparts appear paler, catching the light and emphasizing the sleek, streamlined form of the bird. Unlike other bluebird species, the male Mountain Bluebird lacks any contrasting rusty or white patches on its breast, making it an almost entirely blue vision.
