About
The small, compact bird perched on the branch against a luminous green background is a male Red-legged Honeycreeper (Cyanerpes cyaneus). The males breeding plumage is a breathtaking spectacle of deep indigo and cobalt blue across his entire body, intensifying into a striking, lighter turquoise-blue cap on his head. This brilliant blue contrasts sharply with the velvety black mask around the eyes, the wings, and the tail. The most distinctive feature, which gives the species its common name, is the presence of bright, coral-red legs and feet, providing a remarkable splash of color against the otherwise deep blue and black feathering. His short, curved black bill is clearly visible, adapted for probing flowers for nectar and capturing small insects in the tropical forests and plantations of Central and South America.
