About

Standing upright at a feeding dish surrounded by petunias and red berries, this bird is the Eurasian Nuthatch (Sitta europaea), a distinctive and energetic species common across Palearctic woodlands and gardens. This individual exhibits the characteristic blue-grey upperparts, contrasting sharply with the warm, rusty-orange flanks and breast. A prominent black stripe, or mask, runs through its keen, dark eye, standing out against the white cheek and throat. Uniquely among European birds, it is often seen descending tree trunks head-first, a feat made possible by its disproportionately large feet and strong claws. Its powerful, pointed bill is clearly aimed upwards, suggesting a momentary pause from seed consumption to scan its surroundings, embodying the species' busy, resourceful nature.
