About
This remarkable marine animal is a Porcupine Puffer (Diodon holocanthus), an expert at deterring predators. Unlike its close relative, the pufferfish, which has spines that are only visible when it inflates, the porcupine puffer's sharp quills are always present and act as a constant visual warning. When faced with danger, this fish has the incredible ability to rapidly gulp water or air, expanding its body into a round, spiky sphere. This defense mechanism makes it nearly impossible for a predator to swallow. Found in tropical and subtropical seas worldwide, they are a fascinating example of evolutionary adaptation. Their large eyes and perpetually smiling face give them a curious, almost comical appearance, but their defense system is anything but a joke.
