About

The captivating fish in this scene is a Banggai Cardinalfish (Pterapogon kauderni). With my extensive experience, I find this species particularly fascinating due to its unique appearance and behavior. It is easily recognizable by its compressed body, fan-shaped fins, and the distinctive pattern of black and white stripes and spots. This pattern provides excellent camouflage as it hovers among the long spines of sea urchins or between the arms of anemones.

Banggai Cardinalfish are native to a very small area around the Banggai Islands of Indonesia. They are a mouthbrooding species, where the male carries the eggs and then the young in its mouth until they are ready to be released. This dedicated parental care is a crucial survival strategy for this species, helping protect its offspring from the many predators in the wild.
