This incredibly energetic creature, hovering flawlessly while extending its needle-like bill toward a water droplet, is the male Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris). The male is instantly identifiable by his metallic green back and a stunning, iridescent ruby-red gorget (throat patch), which flashes like a jewel when caught by the light. My decades of studying North American avifauna have always highlighted the astounding metabolic rate of this species, sustained by rapidly consuming nectar and small insects. The birds wings, beating so fast they appear blurred, are a marvel of bio-mechanics, allowing it to move in any direction with precision. We observe a posture of immense concentration, showcasing the hummingbirds specialized relationship with flowers and, in this unique instance, a water source.
