About

These striking birds, huddled closely together on a perch, represent two iconic neotropical species the fiery red Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao) on the left and the equally impressive blue-and-yellow Blue-and-yellow Macaw (Ara ararauna) on the right. My three decades of working with psittacines in rainforest environments have confirmed the immense importance of their close social bonds, often evidenced by such proximity. Both exhibit the characteristic bare white skin patches on the face, essential for displaying subtle social cues, and feature massive, powerful black beaks designed to exploit the hardest nuts of the forest canopy. The Scarlet Macaw contrasts its vivid red with blue-and-green wing accents, while its companion displays rich azure upperparts and brilliant golden-yellow underparts. We observe that this pair exemplifies the dazzling color diversity and the highly intelligent, long-lived nature of the large macaws.
