About
Resting majestically on a sun-drenched wooden perch are two magnificent Green-winged Macaws (Ara chloropterus), immediately distinguishable by their sheer size and brilliant coloration. Their plumage is overwhelmingly dominated by a rich, intense scarlet red covering the head, upper back, and breast. The most defining feature, which distinguishes them from the Scarlet Macaw, is the prominent patch of deep green secondary wing coverts, which transitions elegantly to a brilliant blue on the rest of the wing feathers. Their massive, pale, ivory-colored bills are formidable tools for cracking hard nuts and seeds, and the distinct bare white facial patches, lined with rows of tiny red feathers, frame their keen, yellow eyes. Their upright, commanding posture highlights their status as one of the largest and most iconic parrots of the South American rainforests.
