The Canada Goose Watch over the Weir

Lined up in a dignified, almost military row along the edge of a small concrete weir, these large waterfowl are unmistakably Canada Geese (Branta canadensis). Each bird displays the species’ characteristic black head and neck, contrasted sharply by a distinctive white 'chinstrap' that extends across the throat and cheeks. Their bodies are a blend of pale brown and grey, providing excellent camouflage when grazing on open land, with white patches visible on their rumps. Standing at attention above the cascading sheet of water, the geese exhibit a typical state of vigilance, often maintaining a keen watch over their flock members and immediate territory. Their posture suggests a moment of rest before moving to graze or utilizing the water body for bathing, highlighting their successful adaptation to both wild and human-modified aquatic environments across North America.
