What does the web look like when words are banned?

To illustrate the impact of the U.S. government's prohibition of nearly 250 words under President Donald Trump, Synthmedia.fr has developed a plugin that crosses out censored words in the same way U.S. agencies redact sensitive documents.
The plugin allows users to choose between English (based on PEN America's list) and the French translation of these terms.

As a reminder, an ever-growing list of words and documents is currently being removed from websites and government publications in an attempt by the Trump administration to erase all references not only to diversity, equity, and inclusion but also to climate change, vaccines, and a wide range of other topics.

According to PEN America, more than 250 terms and expressions were initially identified as unacceptable under the Trump administration. This list includes diverse words such as "abortion," "women," "disability," "elderly," "Native Americans," and, predictably, the "Gulf of Mexico."

Today, this index has expanded to over 350 terms, now encompassing even positive concepts like "drinking water." Using these words could result in the denial of research funding or the cancellation of other contracts with federal authorities.

PEN America has cross-referenced the list of words banned by federal agencies published by the New York Times with additional terms reported by Reuters, the Washington Post, ProPublica, Science, Gizmodo, 404 Media, Popular Information, Politico's E&E News, and the nonprofit media outlet More Perfect Union.

This censorship, which refuses to call itself by its name, constitutes a severe infringement on freedom of expression in the United States and certainly inspires other authoritarian policies in Europe. The ambition of this plugin is to demonstrate, through a visually clear mechanism, the absurdity of the measure enacted by the current U.S. administration since January 2025.

Le plugin permets de choisir entre l'anglais (d'après la liste de PEN America) et la traduction des mots en français.

Pour rappel, une liste de plus en plus longue de mots et de documents est en train d'être supprimée des sites web et des documents gouvernementaux dans une tentative de l'administration Trump de supprimer toutes les références non seulement à la diversité, à l'équité et à l'inclusion, mais aussi au changement climatique, aux vaccins et à une foule d'autres sujets. 

Selon PEN America, plus de 250 termes et expressions auraient été initialement répertoriés comme inacceptables sous l'administration Trump. Cette liste inclut des mots variés tels que "avortement", "femmes", "handicap", "personnes âgées", "Amérindiens" et, comme on pouvait s'y attendre, le "golfe du Mexique".

Aujourd'hui, ce répertoire s'est élargi à plus de 350 termes, intégrant même des concepts positifs comme "l'eau potable". L'utilisation de ces mots pourrait entraîner le refus de financements pour la recherche ou l'annulation d'autres contrats avec les autorités fédérales.

PEN America a croisé la liste des mots interdits par les agences fédérales et publiées par le New York Times avec d'autres termes signalés par Reuters, le Washington Post, Propublica, Science, Gizmodo, 404 Media, Popular Information, Politico's E&E News et le média à but non lucratif More Perfect Union.

Cette censure qui ne dit pas son nom porte une atteinte grave à la liberté d'expression aux États-Unis bien sur, mais inspire certainement d'autres politiques autoritaires en Europe. L'ambition de ce plugin est de démontrer le plus simplement du monde, par un dispositif visuel évident, de l'absurdité de la mesure souhaitée par le gouvernement américain en place depuis janvier 2025.
