🛠️ HOW IT WORKS

AI Cost Viewer is a Manifest V3 Chrome extension built for accuracy and performance.

1. Content Script — Injected into ChatGPT, Claude, and Google AI Studio pages to render the cost overlay UI.

2. Service Worker — Listens for completed web requests to detect AI API calls finishing in real time.

3. Pricing Engine — When a call completes, the extension extracts the provider name, model name, and token usage from the response, looks up the current price per token from the built-in pricing database, and calculates the exact cost to the nearest fraction of a cent.

4. Overlay UI — The calculated cost is instantly pushed to the overlay widget, which updates live as you chat. Each toast displays a colored provider badge so you always know which provider made the call.

5. Session Tracker — All per-request costs are accumulated into a session total. You can reset the counter at any time.

The extension adds no perceptible latency to your browsing or API calls. It processes data after responses arrive — it never intercepts, delays, or modifies any API request.

A: Very accurate. We reference official published pricing for each provider. Costs match your billing dashboard within a fraction of a cent.

Q: Does it slow down the AI platform I'm using?
A: No. The extension adds zero perceptible latency. It processes responses after they arrive — it never intercepts or delays any API call.

Q: Can I use this in Incognito mode?
A: Yes. Go to chrome://extensions, find AI Cost Viewer, and toggle "Allow in Incognito".

Q: Is the pricing data always current?
A: Yes. We push an extension update whenever a provider changes their pricing. You can check the last pricing update date in the extension popup.

Q: What happens to session data when I close the tab?
A: Session data is stored in browser session storage only and is automatically cleared when the tab closes. Nothing is ever persisted to a remote server.

Q: Is there a paid version?
A: No. AI Cost Viewer is completely free — no paid tier, no premium features, no ads, no tracking.
