About

HashLens – The Offline Hash Identifier & File Verifier by unifybrowse

Every other hash extension on the Chrome Web Store is just a generator. You give it text, it spits out a hash. That solves the easy problem.

The hard problem—the one security researchers, developers, and system admins hit every day—is the exact opposite. You're staring at an unknown 32-character string and you have no idea what algorithm produced it. Is it MD5? NTLM? MD4?

To find out, you usually have to leave your browser, search for an online identifier, paste your string into a random website, and hope they aren't logging your data. There hasn't been a dedicated Chrome extension for this—until now.

HashLens fixes this. It is a completely offline, 100% local hash identifier, text generator, and file integrity verifier built directly into your browser. Hold any unknown hash up to the lens, and it immediately tells you what you're looking at.

CORE FEATURES

• Instant Identification: Paste any hash to instantly identify its algorithm from over 20+ supported formats (including MD5, SHA-256, bcrypt, NTLM, and Argon2). It detects prefixes like $2a$ and $6$ automatically.
• Security Context: Every result includes the correct Hashcat mode number (e.g., MD5 = 0, SHA-256 = 1400) and the John the Ripper format string with one-click copying. Built specifically for CTFs and security workflows.
• Vulnerability Ratings: See at a glance if a hash algorithm is Secure, Weak, or Broken, along with a plain-English explanation.
• Multi-Algorithm Generation: Type any text and generate its hash across 9 different algorithms simultaneously. Export in lowercase hex, uppercase hex, or Base64.
• File Integrity Verifier: Downloaded a large ISO or software installer? Verify its checksum against the developer's published hash. HashLens opens a dedicated tab to process large files using chunked streaming—handling gigabytes of data without uploading a single byte or crashing the popup.
• Smart Clipboard & Context Menus: Open the popup with a hash in your clipboard, and it pre-fills and identifies it instantly. Or, just right-click any selected text on a webpage to identify or hash it without even opening the extension.

PRIVACY BY DESIGN

HashLens is built for zero trust. It requires no host permissions, runs on Chrome's secure Manifest V3 architecture, and contains zero analytics or tracking. Everything—text inputs, file checksums, and clipboard data—is processed locally in your browser using the established @noble/hashes cryptography library. Nothing ever leaves your machine.

HashLens. One problem, solved cleanly.
