About
The vibrant specimen perched here on a bare wooden stump is the Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), a bird universally admired for its dazzling, gem-like colors. Its upper body, including the head, nape, and back, is a brilliant, iridescent turquoise-blue, flecked with lighter, almost crystalline spots along the wings. This luminous azure contrasts sharply with the deep rust-orange of its breast and flanks. A key field mark is the white throat patch and the small patch of reddish-orange below the eye, both set against the birds dark mask. The Kingfisher is characterized by its disproportionately large head, short legs, and, most critically, its long, dagger-like, black bill—a specialized tool perfectly engineered for rapid dives into water to catch small fish, a behavior for which this riverine predator is famous across its extensive Eurasian range.
