Proxy Switcher is a lightweight, fast VPN alternative for scenarios where you specifically need a proxy: store multiple profiles in the ip:port:user:pass format, switch with one click, and route selected sites through secure HTTP(S)/SOCKS endpoints. The extension is built on Manifest V3 and carefully uses Chrome’s system proxy APIs.

Wildcards supported; IP masks auto-converted to CIDR.

Settings take effect immediately—no browser restart.
Popup toggle: Enable/Disable the proxy with one click.

Important: this is not a VPN and does not automatically encrypt all traffic. Encryption and privacy depend on your proxy and protocol (HTTPS/SOCKS).

Get started in 30 seconds:
Open the Extension Settings.
Click Add Profile → choose a proxy type.
Enter the connection string:
Simple node: 127.0.0.1:8080
With auth: 10.0.0.5:1080:alice:secret
(Optional) Set exclusions: *domain.com, <local>, 192.168.1.*
Save and enable the profile. Done!

Note: due to Chrome security limits, the browser may still ask for login/password in a prompt—this is normal.

We do not request access to history, tabs, or page content. The extension works locally and does not send your proxies/logins to third-party servers.

Privacy:
Profile data (host, port, login/password) is stored locally with chrome.storage.
No telemetry or hidden tracking.
You control when the proxy is enabled/disabled.

FAQ

Does this replace a VPN?
No. It’s a system proxy switcher. Encryption and privacy depend on the proxy (e.g., HTTPS/SOCKS5).

Chrome asks for login/password even if I put them in the string?
The browser may still prompt due to security policies. Enter credentials in the dialog—expected behavior.

How to “forget” proxy authorization?
Disable the profile in the popup/settings, remove any saved OS credentials (if cached), restart the browser. Create a new profile if needed.

Can I route only part of traffic through the proxy?
Yes. Use exclusions (bypass) for domains and local networks—everything else goes through the proxy.

Where are profiles stored?
Locally, in chrome.storage. Data never leaves your device.

Reliability tips:
Check node availability (ping, port).
For SOCKS5, use the correct port and auth if required.
Watch latency—slow proxies slow down sites.
For corporate networks, add localhost and <local> to exclusions to keep internal resources working.
