About
The striking fish swimming in this marine environment is a Moorish Idol (Zanclus cornutus). In my decades as a marine biologist, I have consistently been drawn to the unique and elegant appearance of this species, with its compressed, disc-like body and extended dorsal filament. Its bold black, white, and yellow bands are instantly recognizable, making it a favorite for both divers and aquarium enthusiasts. Moorish Idols are found throughout the Indo-Pacific region, from East Africa to Mexico. They are known to be peaceful and omnivorous, grazing on algae, coral polyps, and small invertebrates. Their specific diet and delicate nature make them a challenge to keep in an aquarium, but their serene presence and graceful movements make them a symbol of the health and beauty of a coral reef.
