Web Recall

About

Web Recall keeps a private, searchable memory of the pages you read.  It captures visible text, embeds it locally via your own Ollama instance, and lets you rediscover information from a side panel without sending data anywhere else.

  Key features
  • Local-first capture - visible page text is stored in your browser’s IndexedDB; nothing leaves your machine.
  • Semantic search & Ask - find passages or ask questions with retrieval‑augmented answers that cite their sources.
  • Daily highlights - get a quick summary of what you read each day, with links back to the original pages.
  • Memory manager - browse, delete, backfill, or export/import your stored pages in bulk.
  • On-demand tools - optional “fetch more”, “get page summary”, and “search memory” helpers for the Ask flow.
  • Side-panel UX - keyboard shortcut (Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+Y) and context menu entries open the panel from any page.

  How it works
  1. Install Ollama locally and pull the embedding/chat models you prefer.
  2. Browse normally - the extension captures visible text after a short idle period.
  3. Open the side panel to search, ask questions, review highlights, or manage stored pages.
  4. Everything runs locally; the only network calls are to your own Ollama server at 127.0.0.1.

  Privacy & security
  • No browsing data is uploaded to remote services.
  • Embeddings and summaries are generated via your local Ollama instance.
  • Tools operate on pages already captured; optional fetches for “fetch_more” obey your allow/deny list.
  • Pause capture or whitelist/blacklist domains at any time.
  • Source code available on GitHub for inspection.
