BlockLang: Take Control of Your Search Results and Online Safety

Tired of irrelevant or foreign-language results cluttering your searches? BlockLang is a Chrome extension that puts you in charge. Clean up your search experience and stay safe by filtering out unwanted languages, websites, and now – scam and phishing domains.

Whether you’re a student, researcher, journalist, or privacy-focused user, BlockLang gives you the power to curate and protect your digital world in just a few clicks.

    Why This Extension Was Created

The extension was initially developed to address a real-world issue experienced by Bulgarian users:
Even when searching in Bulgarian, search engines often return results from Russian-language websites — which are irrelevant, unhelpful, or even misleading.

The goal was to create a tool that automatically appends language and domain filters to search queries, making the search experience cleaner, more relevant, and more local.

    What It Does
    	•	Automatically adds advanced search filters like -lang:ru or -site:*.ru to your search queries on Google and Bing
    	•	Hides search results from predefined Russian domains or languages
    	•	Lets you toggle filtering ON or OFF at any time via a simple popup
    	•	Allows custom blacklists, so you can add any domain you personally want to exclude (e.g., cnn.com, reddit.com, etc.)
    	•	Applies changes immediately, with no need to reload or restart the browser
    	•	Detects and warns about suspicious or scam websites using an external trust-check API
    	•	Shows a full-page warning if a domain is flagged as dangerous

    New Feature: Scam Shield

BlockLang now includes built-in scam and phishing detection through real-time domain analysis.

    Scam Shield Features:
    	•	Real-time scam domain analysis with trust scores
    	•	Automatic classification: Safe, Risky, Dangerous
    	•	Visual warning banners for different threat levels
    	•	Smart caching reduces repeated checks
    	•	“Check Scam” button for on-demand manual analysis

    How Scam Shield Works

Just enable the toggle in settings.
When you navigate to any website, BlockLang checks the domain in real time using external reputation data and internal rules.
If the domain is flagged as suspicious, a warning page will be displayed before the site fully loads.

    Note:
Scam Shield works with real-time checks, not just known scam lists. Results are based on automated scoring and may occasionally be inaccurate. Always use your own judgment. You can report incorrect classifications via the contact form at https://blocklang.org/contact

    Features
    	•	Works on Google and Bing
    	•	Simple ON/OFF toggle from the popup
    	•	Add your own filters (e.g. block any domain or language)
    	•	Remove filters easily
    	•	Scam protection with runtime permissions (requires user approval)
    	•	Privacy-focused: runs only in your browser (no data is tracked or stored externally)

    Version 1.5.1 – What’s New
    	•	Added scam protection system with real-time domain checks
    	•	Displays warning for untrusted websites (based on external reputation data)
    	•	New toggle in settings to enable/disable scam protection
    	•	Minor performance and stability improvements
    	• Optimized local storage usage for better performance

How to Use the Custom Blacklist

You can block any domain, subdomain, or language, but it’s important to format them correctly.
