About

VaultAI is a privacy-focused, local-first summarization tool built directly inside Google Chrome.

Designed specifically for professionals who handle sensitive information (such as healthcare workers, lawyers, and financial analysts), VaultAI extracts critical details and generates structured summaries from text and PDF files.

Unlike conventional AI tools that upload your sensitive documents to external servers, VaultAI performs all text extraction, document chunking, domain routing, and summarization entirely within the local sandbox of your browser using Google Chrome's built-in on-device AI.

No document text or summaries are ever transmitted over the network or stored in the cloud.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Key Features
-----------------------------------------------------------

100% Local Inference: Powered by Google Chrome's native Prompt API (Gemini Nano). Your documents and summaries are processed entirely on your machine.

Drag-and-Drop PDF Text Extraction: Extract and process local PDF files directly within your browser. There is no cloud PDF parser.

Domain-Specific Structured Summaries: Automatically detects if a document is a legal contract, clinical note, or general document, and structures the summary accordingly (extracting key parties, dates, facts, and confidence self-ratings).

Passphrase-Based Rest-Encryption (Opt-In): Secure your locally saved summary history using standard AES-GCM 256-bit encryption. The decryption key is wrapped using PBKDF2-SHA-256 derived from a passphrase you define.

Word (.docx) Exporter: Export your structured summaries, notes, and metadata directly to standard Word documents. Word files are generated entirely in-memory using client-side formatting.

Local Q&A Session: Ask follow-up questions about the active document. Queries are answered locally using transient, isolated model sessions.

Metadata-Only Local Audit Log: Generate and export a metadata-only event log (e.g. character count, timestamp, action result) to verify compliance. The actual text, notes, and summaries are never logged.

Chrome Prompt API Setup Requirements
-----------------------------------------------------------

VaultAI requires Google Chrome (version 148 or higher) and the enabling of Chrome’s experimental built-in AI features. Follow these steps to configure your browser:

1. Open a new tab in Google Chrome and enter: `chrome://flags`

2. Search for **AI Model Storage** (or `#optimization-guide-on-device-model`) and set it to: **Enabled BypassPerfRequirement** (this bypasses performance-checking to ensure Chrome downloads the model weights).

3. Search for **Prompt API for Gemini Nano** (or `#prompt-api-for-gemini-nano`) and set it to: **Enabled**.

4. Click the **Relaunch** button at the bottom of the page to restart Google Chrome completely.

5. Open VaultAI in the side panel. It may take a few minutes for Chrome to download the local Gemini Nano model weights in the background. You can check the download progress or verify the API status within the extension's on-boarding wizard.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Privacy / Zero-Cloud Explanation
-----------------------------------------------------------

VaultAI operates under a strict Zero-Cloud Invariant. This means:
No External Network Calls: The extension does not make any `fetch`, `XMLHttpRequest`, or `WebSocket` connections to external servers for summarization. The codebase is self-contained.

Local AI Engine: All AI inference is run directly on your computer's CPU/GPU by Google Chrome's native Prompt API.

Metadata-Only History Search: While non-sensitive metadata (such as Matter/Folder titles and tags) is stored in plaintext local storage to enable fast searching and filtering, all sensitive fields (the summary, parties, dates, facts, private notes, and verification flags) are encrypted at rest with AES-GCM 256-bit encryption.

Local-Only Data Storage: Your data stays on your machine. Uninstalling the extension permanently deletes all associated local storage data.

-----------------------------------------------------------
AI Output Disclaimer
-----------------------------------------------------------

VaultAI is an analysis and drafting aid. It uses an on-device Large Language Model (Gemini Nano) which may produce outputs that contain errors, omissions, or factual inaccuracies.

Always verify all outputs: You must manually review and verify all generated summaries, extracted dates, parties, and facts before relying on them.

No Professional Advice: The outputs generated by VaultAI do not constitute, and should not be used as a substitute for, professional legal counsel, medical diagnosis/advice, financial advising, or formal regulatory compliance checks.

Confidence Badges: The confidence levels shown in the interface are self-reported ratings generated by the model itself, not an independent validation of correctness.
