About
Read more Japanese, more confidently.
Nihongo Tint highlights every Japanese word on the page by its grammatical role — particles in one color, verbs in another, nouns in a third — so the structure of every
sentence is visible at a glance. No popups, no setup, no API keys. Just open a page and start reading.
WHAT IT DOES
★ Always-on grammar tinting. Particles, verbs, nouns, adjectives, adverbs, auxiliary verbs, conjunctions, and more — each gets its own color across every page you read.
★ Click-to-lookup sidebar. Tap any tinted word to see its dictionary definition (Jisho), reading, romaji, and example sentences (Tatoeba) — all in one place. No need to leave
the page.
★ Sentence context. When you click a word inside a YouTube comment, the sidebar shows the whole sentence with your clicked word highlighted, plus a play button to hear it
aloud.
★ Built-in audio. Click ▶ to hear any word or sentence read aloud. Uses your browser's built-in voice — no network calls, no API costs.
★ AI-powered vocabulary flashcards. Open the popup and tap "Vocabulary flashcards" to extract topic-specific words from whatever you're reading. Powered by Chrome's on-device
Gemini Nano — completely private, no data sent anywhere.
★ AI comprehension quizzes. Test whether you actually understood what you read. Same on-device AI, free and offline.
★ YouTube-aware. Color-codes captions, English→Japanese translation overlays on comments, focuses content to what you're actually watching (skips the recommended sidebar).
★ Per-site toggle. Turn the extension on and off per domain with one click.
WHO IT'S FOR
Japanese learners at any level. Beginners get a visual scaffold for grammar; intermediates get instant lookups without breaking flow; advanced readers get fast vocab and
comprehension drilling on real-world content.
PRIVACY
Nihongo Tint does not collect, transmit, or sell any personal data. The extension stores a few preferences locally on your device and never sends them anywhere. Dictionary
lookups go directly from your browser to Jisho's public API. AI features run entirely on-device using Chrome's Built-in AI — no servers involved.
FREE TO INSTALL, NO ACCOUNT REQUIRED
The whole v1 experience is free: tinting, dictionary lookup, sidebar, audio playback, AI flashcards, comprehension quizzes. No ads, no tracking, no required subscription. The
core experience stays free forever.
A future release may add optional credit packs for premium cloud voices (high-quality Google TTS) — those have a real per-use cost. Everything that costs nothing to run stays
free.
