- May 23, 2026description
TaskGator helps college students stay on top of their coursework. It lives alongside your Canvas tabs, consolidating assignments from all your courses into a single, organized view with smart sorting, filtering, and customization that syncs across your devices. TaskGator does not write essays, generate discussion posts, or complete assignments for you. It is a low-friction organizational tool that helps you understand what is due, when it is due, and what your professor expects. TaskGator also includes an AI-powered Course Assistant (limited pilot access) that reads your syllabi, assignments, rubrics, discussion topics, announcements, and course pages, then answers your questions with source citations so you can verify every answer. Professors scatter assignment instructions across multiple locations in a course - the assignment page, a module, the syllabus PDF, a rubric, an announcement posted weeks later - and Canvas has no way to search across all of it. The TaskGator Course Assistant does. Key Features: • View and manage assignments across all your courses in one place • Smart sorting by due date, priority, or course with customizable filters • Mark assignments complete, set custom due dates, and flag items for follow-up • AI Course Assistant that answers questions about your courses with cited sources • Automatic background monitoring keeps the AI's knowledge up to date as professors make changes • Works alongside your existing Canvas workflow. Getting Started: Create a free TaskGator account and log into Canvas as usual. TaskGator works with any institution that uses Canvas LMS. AI Course Assistant access is currently available by request for pilot participants. Privacy First: TaskGator is built with security and student data privacy as foundational requirements. Your data is encrypted and is never sold or shared with advertisers. This is a release preview. We're actively developing new features and improving the experience based on student feedback. If you run into any issues, use the built-in feedback tool to let us know. —————————————————— What's New • v0.9.1778.2889 (May 8, 2026) o Rebuilt with WebAssembly: TaskGator has been completely rebuilt using WebAssembly for improved performance and security. Your sessions are now protected using modern asymmetric key exchange (ECDH P-256) to establish secure connections. Assignment icons have been refreshed with filled/outlined variants that visually distinguish completed vs pending work at a glance. • v0.9.1777.3959 (April 28, 2026) o Smarter sync recovery: When a course content sync hits a transient error (a brief Canvas outage, a slow connection, an oversized lecture deck) TaskGator now automatically tries again the next time it sees new content in that course, and clears the error once a sync succeeds. No more courses stuck in "error" state waiting on a manual retry. Also fixed two underlying bugs where a retry could leave a course in an inconsistent state, and a rare case where cached content could be dropped unnecessarily during cleanup. • v0.9.1776.5922 (April 19, 2026) o Better diagnostics when things go wrong: When you report a bug through the feedback form, TaskGator now better understands what happened so we can diagnose and fix your specific issue and limit the need for follow-up questions. Also fixed an issue where certain course-wide questions ("list all assignments", "what quizzes are in this course?") were failing silently. Truncated source tags at the end of answers (the stray "[Source: filename.pdf" text) are now cleanly removed. • v0.9.1776.0220 (April 12, 2026) o Cleaner course content: Fixed an issue where PowerPoint slides were extracted as unreadable XML instead of clean text — affecting 93% of PPTX files across all courses. Large files (up to 200MB) like oversized lecture decks now have their text extracted as well. The AI now accurately counts assignments, shows both graded and ungraded discussions, and correctly separates quizzes from exams. Sign-out is more reliable, and the feedback thumbs-down button now lets you Send, Skip, or Cancel your rating. • v0.9.1775.7614 (April 9, 2026) o Better AI with complete course knowledge: TaskGator now reads everything in your courses (assignments, syllabi, files, announcements, modules, quizzes, discussions, and rubrics) so your Course Assistent can answer questions about anything in your class. Image-only PDFs like scanned handouts and slide decks are now readable too. Clicking a file citation opens the original document directly in Canvas. Initial sync shows real-time progress ("Processing file 12 of 51..."), and you can give thumbs-down feedback on answers that miss the mark. • v0.9.1775.4063 (April 5, 2026) o Full functionality restored: Fixed an issue where TaskGator installed from the Chrome Web Store would not load assignments, courses, or AI features — appearing offline even when Canvas was open. The extension now works correctly right after installation, with all features available as expected. • v0.9.1775.3244 (April 4, 2026) o Faster loading: TaskGator now shows your assignments immediately from cache instead of waiting for a session check, eliminating a 30+ second spinner some users experienced. Also improved reliability of the connection between the side panel and Chrome - if the browser's background process restarts, TaskGator now recovers gracefully instead of hanging.TaskGator helps college students stay on top of their coursework. The provider chooser never opened and the screen showed "An unexpected error occurred." All four sign-in methods now work again, both on the sign-in screen and on the sign-up screen. When a professor updates an announcement, edits a page, or changes an assignment, the AI's knowledge updates automatically. Deleted content is also cleaned up so the AI doesn't cite outdated information. Added an on-page "last synced" indicator on Canvas assignment pages. • v0.9.1774.8994 (March 30, 2026) o Stability improvements: Fixed an issue where switching courses quickly could show messages from the wrong course. Fixed completed assignments sometimes reappearing in "what's due" responses. Improved sync status messages to be clearer about what's happening. • v0.9.1774.7229 (March 28, 2026) o Sync reliability: Content sync is now more reliable, with automatic retry for files that fail on the first attempt. Courses that partially sync now automatically retry in the background instead of requiring a manual refresh. • v0.9.1774.5371 (March 26, 2026) o Smarter AI answers: The AI now reads quiz descriptions, course late submission policies, and detailed rubric criteria. This means better answers about quiz content, grading policies, and assignment expectations. • v0.9.1774.3735 (March 24, 2026) o Cross-device sync: Your task customizations (custom due dates, hidden assignments, follow-up flags) now sync across all your devices. Set a custom due date on your laptop, and see it automatically appear on your desktop.

What's New
• v0.9.1779.0644 (May 17, 2026)
o Restored sign-in: Fixed a regression introduced in v0.9.1778.2889 (the WebAssembly rebuild) that prevented sign-in with Google, Apple, Facebook, or Microsoft. The provider chooser never opened and the screen showed "An unexpected error occurred." All four sign-in methods now work again, both on the sign-in screen and on the sign-up screen. Sign-in errors also now include a short diagnostic reference code so support can help you faster if anything else ever goes wrong. Cleaned up a handful of harmless-but-noisy "file not found" messages that were appearing in the browser console on every TaskGator panel open.
• v0.9.1778.2889 (May 8, 2026)
o Rebuilt with WebAssembly: TaskGator has been completely rebuilt using WebAssembly for improved performance and security. Your sessions are now protected using modern asymmetric key exchange (ECDH P-256) to establish secure connections. Assignment icons have been refreshed with filled/outlined variants that visually distinguish completed vs pending work at a glance.
• v0.9.1777.3959 (April 28, 2026)
o Smarter sync recovery: When a course content sync hits a transient error (a brief Canvas outage, a slow connection, an oversized lecture deck) TaskGator now automatically tries again the next time it sees new content in that course, and clears the error once a sync succeeds. No more courses stuck in "error" state waiting on a manual retry. Also fixed two underlying bugs where a retry could leave a course in an inconsistent state, and a rare case where cached content could be dropped unnecessarily during cleanup.
• v0.9.1776.5922 (April 19, 2026)
o Better diagnostics when things go wrong: When you report a bug through the feedback form, TaskGator now better understands what happened so we can diagnose and fix your specific issue and limit the need for follow-up questions. Also fixed an issue where certain course-wide questions ("list all assignments", "what quizzes are in this course?") were failing silently. Truncated source tags at the end of answers (the stray "[Source: filename.pdf" text) are now cleanly removed.
