About
This unofficial extension allows you to use your local machine to compile an Overleaf project, instead of relying on a compile server. This can be useful if your LaTeX project takes too long to compile on the server and you get timeouts, or if you are using an Overleaf Community Edition instance running on a server that is not performant enough. Once the extension is set up, clicking the standard "Recompile" button in the Overleaf will trigger a local compile. You can still click "Compile on web" to request that the server compile your project. The compilation result is displayed in the default PDF viewer as usual, with features like SyncTeX working like when using server compile. Setting up the extension requires installing a python pip package on your local machine so that the extension can pass on the latex source to the compiler, and return the output PDF to the browser for display. The extension guides you through the process; you will need to run "pip install local-compile-for-overleaf" in your terminal for the extension to work. Both the extension and the python helper package are free and open source, so you can inspect the source code.
