The exquisite organism floating in the dark is a Spotted Jellyfish (Phyllorhiza punctata). In my long tenure as a marine biologist, this species never ceases to impress me with its stunning form. The bell is a translucent, dome-like structure, beautifully patterned with dozens of white spots. Below the spotted bell, its most prominent feature is the massive cluster of ruffled, convoluted oral arms, which have a vibrant, peach-like coloration. These arms are its primary feeding tool, capturing plankton and other small organisms. The contrast between its spotted bell and the intricate arms creates a visually compelling subject, highlighting the simple beauty of this successful invertebrate.
