About

You just wrote a three-paragraph reply and hit send. Your colleague reads it, skims past the second half, and misses the key question buried at the end.

Long emails get skimmed. Short emails get read. But Gmail never tells you how long your email actually is. There is no word count. No character count. No reading time estimate. You write blind, send blind, and hope the other person reads it all.

Same problem when reading. A twenty-message thread with a hundred quoted replies. How much actual content is in there? Gmail does not tell you. You scroll through walls of text with no sense of how much is original and how much is recycled quotes.

This extension adds word count, character count, and estimated reading time to every email in Gmail. For reading and for writing. Automatic, inline, zero configuration.

WHY WORD COUNT MATTERS IN EMAIL

Email is the most common form of professional writing, but it has no word count. Every text editor, every document tool, every blogging platform shows word count. Gmail does not.

This matters more than people think:

- Emails over 200 words get lower response rates. Knowing your count helps you trim before sending.
- Reading time estimates help you decide whether to read now or save for later. A 30-second email gets read immediately. A 5-minute email gets deferred.
- Character counts matter for people who paste email content into systems with character limits - CRM notes, ticket descriptions, SMS follow-ups.
- Thread analysis helps you understand conversation volume. Ten messages might contain 50 original words and 500 words of quoted replies.

Most people have no idea how long their emails are. This extension makes that invisible information visible.

WHAT THIS EXTENSION DOES

Word Counter for Gmail runs inside the Gmail web interface as a content script. It analyzes email text and displays statistics automatically. No buttons to click, no panels to open. Stats appear inline, right where you are working.

Here is what you get:

Reading Stats - Open any email and see word count, character count, and estimated reading time displayed below the message body. Stats appear for every expanded message in a thread.

Thread Totals - In multi-message threads, a summary bar shows the total word count, character count, and reading time for the entire conversation. Individual per-message stats appear below each message so you can see how long each reply actually is.

Smart Quote Filtering - The extension strips quoted replies, forwarded blocks, and Gmail signature sections before counting. You see the actual original content count, not inflated numbers from recycled text.

Compose Counter - When you write a new email or reply, a live word counter appears in the compose window. It updates as you type with a slight debounce so it does not distract. Shows words, characters, and estimated reading time.

Reading Time Estimate - Based on 200 words per minute, the standard average reading speed for English text. A quick indicator so you know if your email is a 30-second read or a 5-minute essay.

HOW IT WORKS

1. Install the extension. No sign-in, no setup.
2. Open Gmail in your browser.
3. Open any email thread. Stats appear automatically below each message.
4. Compose a new email or reply. A live counter appears in the compose window.

That is it. Zero configuration. Stats appear everywhere in Gmail, automatically.

WHY INLINE INSTEAD OF A POPUP

Some word counter tools make you copy text into a separate window or open a popup to see stats. That breaks your workflow. You have to leave what you are doing, paste text somewhere, read the number, then go back.

This extension puts the stats right inside Gmail. Below the message you are reading. Inside the compose window you are typing in. You never leave the page. You never click a button. The information is just there when you need it.

REAL SCENARIOS WHERE THIS HELPS

Professional communication:
You are writing to a client about a project update. The counter shows 347 words. You know that is too long for a status update, so you trim it to 150 words. The client reads every word and responds the same day.

Cold outreach:
You are sending a pitch email. Research says cold emails between 50-125 words get the highest response rates. The compose counter lets you hit that range precisely instead of guessing.

Academic correspondence:
You are emailing a professor with a research question. The thread has 12 messages. The total bar shows 2,400 words across the thread, but only 800 are original content - the rest is quoted replies. You know exactly how much substance is in the conversation.

Team updates:
Your weekly status email goes to 15 people. The counter shows 600 words. You split it into bullet points and get it down to 200. Your team actually reads it now.

Customer support:
You are drafting a detailed support response. The counter shows 450 words and a 2-minute read time. You add a TL;DR at the top for busy customers and keep the detail below for those who need it.

Content creation:
You draft blog posts and newsletters in Gmail before moving them to your publishing tool. The word counter gives you an instant length check without leaving your drafting environment.

PRIVACY AND PERMISSIONS

WHAT THIS EXTENSION DOES NOT DO

- Does not require any login or sign-in.
- Does not access Gmail API or request OAuth tokens.
- Does not read, store, or transmit your email content.
- Does not track usage, run analytics, or share data with third parties.
- Does not make any network requests to external servers.

The only permission it needs:

- storage - To remember your settings: whether to show reading stats and whether to show the compose counter. That is the only thing stored. No email content is ever saved.

Everything runs locally in your browser. The extension reads text from the Gmail page DOM, counts words and characters in memory, and displays the result. Nothing is sent anywhere.

FREE AND UNLIMITED

No account required. No trial period. No feature limits. No premium tier.

Install it. Use it. Every email, every thread, every compose window. Unlimited.
