ZapRedact removes sensitive information from PDF documents — entirely on your device.

Why local matters
HIPAA, attorney-client privilege, financial compliance, basic privacy hygiene — none of these survive uploading a sensitive document to a cloud redaction service. ZapRedact runs the entire pipeline (text extraction, OCR, pattern detection, redaction, export) inside your browser. The PDF is read directly off your disk. Nothing is uploaded.

How private is "100% local"?
The detection model, OCR engine (Tesseract), text extraction (PDF.js), and final PDF rendering (pdf-lib) are all bundled inside the extension and run as JavaScript and WebAssembly inside your browser. The extension's only network calls are:

1. Verifying your free or Pro license (sends your license key, receives "active/expired"). No file content is sent.
2. Counting redacted pages once per redaction (free tier enforcement). No file content is sent.

Documents are never transmitted, copied, cached, or logged on any server.
