About
gTabby: Tame Your Tab Chaos!
🧠 Are you a tab hoarder? Do you find yourself with hundreds of open tabs, losing track of important work notes, drowning in duplicates? Enter gTabby—the ultimate tool to visualize, organize, and optimize your browsing experience. This gTabby side-panel and dashboard becomes your new control center. You no longer need to manage tabs in the browser bar; manage them here.
================
Latest Version 2.3.1: Side-panel updates
- New: Add keyboard shortcut to open Side-panel. Default: CMD+SHIFT+PERIOD for Mac, Ctrl+Shift+S for Linux/Windows. Set your own shortcut in chrome://extensions/shortcuts
- When side-panel is opened, ENTER key enters note editing mode, ESC exits and saves the note.
- Bugfix: Note taking: Don't refresh Dashboard or Side-panel while user is still typing
- Bugfix: With side-panel opened, if user goes to another tab, properly follow the user.

🚀 Real-World Problems gTabby Solves:
- The >100 Tab Clutter: Finding one specific tab in a sea of tiny, unreadable browser tabs.
- Duplicate Waste: Opening the same pages repeatedly because you can't find the active one.
- Amnesia Hoarding: Leaving tabs open "just in case" because you don't know what you've already read.
- Accidental Loss: Closing a tab and losing it forever in cluttered, disorganized browser history.
- Context Switching: Losing your place and focus when bouncing between tasks.
🛠️ Core Features & How It Works:
⚡ Chrome Side Panel (New!): Manage tabs, notes, and labels directly from the browser sidebar without leaving your active page. Features a padlock indicator (🔒) showing which tabs are safely persisted.
⏱️ Smart Auto-Close & Archiving: Set automated rules to close inactive or excess tabs to keep your browser fast. Pinned and annotated tabs are always spared.
🗃️ Strict Tab Retention: Closed tabs are kept in a local archive. Custom retention limits enforce both size (tab count) and age (time elapsed) caps to prevent database bloat.
🔍 Instant Search & Filter: Query tabs in real-time by title, URL, notes, or labels. Features a Regex toggle for advanced queries, and clickable label chips for quick filtering.
📝 Side-Panel Markdown Notes: Add formatted notes, checklists, and links to any tab directly from the side panel or dashboard. Notes are tied to the URL, shared across duplicates, and persist even after the tab is closed.
📊 Focus & Activity Tracking: Tracks active time spent on each tab (with a 3-second threshold to filter noise). Displays per-tab activity stats (creation time, last read time, and total active focus duration) in the side panel.
🔄 Opt-in Cross-Device Sync: Keep your notes and labels synced across devices using your Google Account (storage.sync). Fully opt-in; browsing history and focus stats remain strictly local.
💾 Interactive HTML Snapshots & Backups:
Export your session as a standalone, fully interactive HTML file with live search and markdown rendering for offline use.
Pick a persistent local folder (like Google Drive) via the File System Access API to auto-save JSON and HTML backups.
🗂️ Wildcard Custom Categories: Group tabs automatically using domain rules (e.g., *.github.com) to organize your dashboard. Easily toggle between prioritized categories and a flat "All-Tabs" list.
⌨️ Keyboard-Driven Workflows: Navigate your dashboard, cycle focus history, and switch views using global keyboard shortcuts.
🇹🇼 Global Localization: Available in 11 languages (English, Chinese, Hindi, French, Spanish, Japanese, Arabic, Portuguese, Korean, Urdu, Russian).
🔒 Privacy-First: No third-party accounts, no trackers, and no external servers. All data is local by default.
