About
Know what you'll actually take home before you accept an Upwork contract. This calculator turns a contract amount into your real pay after the freelancer service fee, plus a clear tax set-aside — in one popup, one click while you write a proposal or review an offer. WHAT IT DOES • Real take-home, fast. Enter the contract amount and your service-fee % — see the Upwork fee, what Upwork pays you, a recommended tax set-aside, and your estimated take-home. • Reverse mode. Type the take-home you want to keep and it solves the contract amount to charge (rounded up so you never come in under target). • Tax set-aside you control. A 25–30% guideline is built in and fully adjustable — it's a savings buffer, not an exact tax bill. 2026 FEES, SOURCED • Upwork's freelancer service fee changed on May 1, 2025 from a flat 10% to a variable 0%–15% set per contract and locked when you send a proposal. Because Upwork doesn't publish the formula, you enter the exact % Upwork shows you (default 10%, the most common). Straight from Upwork's official Freelancer Service Fee page, with a last-verified date. • The ~3% payment-processing fee and the Contract Initiation Fee are charged to the CLIENT, not deducted from your earnings — so they're correctly left out of your take-home. • Self-employment tax context (15.3% = 12.4% Social Security + 2.9% Medicare) is sourced from the IRS. PRIVATE BY DESIGN • Works fully offline. The data is bundled in the extension — no network calls. • Collects nothing. No account, no login, no tracking. Your numbers stay on your device. • Never connects to your Upwork account. FREE The whole calculator is free. No paywall on any single calculation. This extension is an independent tool and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Upwork. All trademarks belong to their respective owners. Estimates only — not financial or tax advice; the tax set-aside is a savings guideline, not your exact tax liability. Upwork can change its fees; always confirm the % shown on your own contract.
