About

Turn YouTube into your private phrasebook.

The Gakko - Clip captures the exact line you're watching on YouTube, translates it with Chrome's built-in AI, and saves it locally for later review. Perfect for language learners who collect phrases as they watch.

# What you get

- One-press capture — Press `Alt+S` or click the button to save the current caption line
- Hover-to-translate — Hover any word on a caption to see its translation instantly
- Comment translation — Read YouTube comments in your language without leaving the page
- On-device AI — Uses Chrome's built-in Translator (Gemini Nano). Your captions never leave your browser
- 18 languages — Supports Spanish, Japanese, Russian, Chinese, Korean, French, German, Portuguese, and more
- CSV export — Import your saved phrases into Anki, Notion, or any flashcard app
- Word-level segmentation — Japanese, Chinese, and Thai captions are segmented with `Intl.Segmenter` so you can hover individual words

# Privacy by design

- No account, no cloud sync, no tracking
- All captures are stored in your browser's IndexedDB
- Translations happen on your device — no data sent to any server
- Only the YouTube page DOM is accessed to read caption text

# Requirements

- Chrome 138+ (Translator API stable)
- YouTube watch pages (`youtube.com/watch?v=*`)
