About

THE BUREAU OF PROLEFEED
Satirical headline rewriting for the age of normalization.

  WHAT IS PROLEFEED?

Prolefeed is a browser extension that transforms news headlines into
Onion-style satire — replacing the deadened language of power with pointed
absurdist commentary. Named after the propaganda unit in George Orwell's
1984, it exists to restore moral clarity by making the absurd visible
  again.

When headlines say "Government Considers Reform," Prolefeed says what the
reform actually means. When the language of atrocity is softened into
bureaucratic euphemism, Prolefeed sharpens it back into something you can
  feel.

This is a tool for people who are tired of reading the news and feeling
  nothing.

THIS IS SATIRE. ALWAYS CLEARLY LABELED.

Every satirized headline is marked with a prominent red [SATIRE] tag. A
disclaimer banner appears at the top of every activated page reading:
"SATIRE — NOT REAL HEADLINES. Do not share them as real news."

The extension does not attempt to deceive. It exists to puncture, not to
mislead. Original article links and all page content remain completely
untouched — only the headline text is replaced, and only when you
  explicitly activate the extension.

  HOW IT WORKS

  1. Navigate to a news website
  2. Click the Prolefeed icon in your browser toolbar
  3. Click "Activate Bureau"
  4. Headlines are extracted from the page, sent to an AI model for
satirical rewriting, and replaced in-place — each labeled [SATIRE] with a
  red background
  5. Click "Deactivate Bureau" at any time to instantly restore original
  headlines

The extension is entirely on-demand. It does not run automatically, does
not monitor your browsing, and does not activate unless you click the
  button.

Some headlines are intentionally preserved — acute tragedies, ongoing
atrocities, and stories where satire would be inappropriate are returned
unchanged by the AI. The extension is built around the principle that not
  everything should be a punchline.

Works on all major English-language news websites.

FREE TIER + BRING YOUR OWN KEY

FREE TIER — No sign-up required. Your first 5 satirizations are powered by
our backend. Install and start immediately.

BRING YOUR OWN KEY (BYOK) — After the free tier, or if you prefer from the
start, use your own API key from OpenRouter, Anthropic, or OpenAI. Your
key is stored only in your browser's local storage and is never
transmitted to us. With your own key, there is no usage limit.

To get a free API key: OpenRouter.ai offers free and low-cost access to
  multiple AI models.

  WHY THE "SCRIPTING" PERMISSION?

The scripting permission is required for the core function of this
  extension:

  1. Inject a lightweight CSS stylesheet that styles the [SATIRE] labels and
   disclaimer banner
  2. Run a script to extract headline elements from the news page's DOM
  3. Replace extracted headline text with satirized versions in-place

This is the minimum required for the extension to work. Scripts are only
injected when you explicitly click "Activate Bureau." The extension
injects nothing on page load and runs no background content scripts.

  The host permissions (prolefeed-api.prolefeed.workers.dev, openrouter.ai,
api.anthropic.com, api.openai.com) are required to send headlines to the
AI backend for satirical rewriting — either our free-tier Worker or your
  chosen BYOK provider.

  PRIVACY

Prolefeed collects minimal anonymous analytics — specifically:
  • The news site domain (e.g., nytimes.com) — never the full URL or article
   content
  • A hashed device fingerprint (one-way SHA-256 hash; cannot be reversed to
   identify you)
  • Aggregate counts of headlines processed and skipped per activation
  • Error codes when something fails

  We do NOT collect:
  • Your browsing history or reading patterns
  • Article titles, content, or full URLs
  • Your name, email address, or persistent IP address
  • Your API keys (stored only in your browser, never transmitted to us)
  • Which AI provider you use in BYOK mode

Analytics data is stored on Cloudflare infrastructure and automatically
deleted after 90 days. Analytics pings are fire-and-forget — if they fail,
   the extension continues working normally.
