About
OVERVIEW Alt Text Auto-Fill is a free, Open Source Chrome extension developed by the Software for Progress Foundation to make the internet more inclusive. Using TensorFlow.js and the coco-ssd model, it automatically generates alt text for images, ensuring that people who rely on screen readers can access the same content as everyone else. This extension reflects our mission: accessibility is not optional — it is a right. By keeping it free, offline, and Open Source, we’re breaking down barriers and giving individuals, educators, and developers the ability to make the web a more welcoming place for all. 100% Offline | 100% Free | 100% Open Source --- WHY ALT TEXT MATTERS Alt text is more than a technical requirement — it is a matter of dignity and access. - Equity – Over 285 million people worldwide with visual impairments deserve the same access to information as sighted users. - Inclusion – Alt text ensures that communities often left behind can participate fully in digital spaces. - Resilience – Alt text provides context when images don’t load or when connections are slow. - Progress – A more accessible web is a more just web. When we add alt text, we’re not just improving compliance — we’re ensuring human connection. --- FEATURES - AI-Powered – Detects people, animals, and objects in images using TensorFlow.js and coco-ssd. - Fully Offline – All processing happens in your browser. No accounts. No servers. No surveillance. - Inclusive by Design – Respects existing alt text, skips decorative images, and avoids overreach. - Open Source – Transparent, auditable, and built for community contribution. --- HOW IT WORKS - Detects images missing alt text - Analyzes image content and surrounding context - Generates natural descriptions using AI + heuristics - Applies alt text directly into the page Example Outputs: - Photo of a group → “Three people” or “A group of people” - Photo of a pet → “A dog” or “Two cats” - Everyday objects → “A laptop and a cup” - Wide image → “Wide banner image” - Tall/narrow → “Tall portrait image” - Small glyphs → “Small icon” - High-res photos → “Large high-resolution image” --- WHO IT’S FOR - Screen reader users who deserve equal access to the web - Developers who want to test and strengthen accessibility in their work - Educators teaching why inclusion matters in design - Advocates showing that Open Source solutions can make an immediate difference - Anyone who believes technology should serve people, not exclude them --- SOFTWARE FOR PROGRESS FOUNDATION This project was created by the Software for Progress Foundation, a nonprofit (501(c)(3) pending) dedicated to supporting developers who build Open Source software that benefits all people. We believe: - Accessibility is a right, not a premium feature - Open Source is the path to a fairer digital future - Developers deserve mentorship, resources, and funding to sustain projects that matter Every accessible image is a step toward a web where technology works for communities, not against them. 🌐 Learn more: https://softwareforprogress.org --- OPEN SOURCE & CONTRIBUTIONS - License: MIT - Source: https://github.com/SoftwareforProgress/Alt-Text-Auto-Fill - Contribute: Join us in shaping this project — whether you’re a developer, designer, or accessibility advocate --- JOIN THE MOVEMENT By installing Alt Text Auto-Fill, you’re not just improving your browsing experience — you’re helping create a more inclusive internet. No setup. No accounts. No barriers. Just Open Source accessibility, powered by community.
