About
Vidsy — Download videos and audio from any website
Vidsy is a powerful yet simple Chrome extension that detects and downloads video and audio from nearly any webpage. Whether it's a direct MP4, an adaptive HLS stream, a DASH manifest, or a merged video+audio pair, Vidsy handles it — all locally in your browser, with no accounts, no servers, no tracking.
━━━ KEY FEATURES ━━━
• Detects HLS (.m3u8), DASH (.mpd), and direct MP4/WebM streams automatically
• Multi-GB safe — streams segments through OPFS and remuxes with libav.js WebAssembly
• Extract audio as MP3 from any video source with one click
• Merge separate video + audio tracks into a single MP4 (for YouTube-style adaptive streams)
• Parallel HTTP Range downloads for 2–4× faster speeds on direct media
• Download history with retry, pause, and resume
• Side panel and popup views — work the way you prefer
• Filename templates with tokens: {title}, {date}, {host}, {resolution}
• Dark and light theme
• Automatic subtitle detection (VTT, SRT)
• Respects DRM — clearly marks protected streams and refuses to download them
━━━ HOW IT WORKS ━━━
1. Open any page with a video or audio player
2. Click the Vidsy icon — detected media appears instantly
3. Pick a resolution or format, hit Download
4. Watch progress in real time — multi-GB files just work
Vidsy handles large files (tested past 5 GB) by streaming everything through OPFS (the browser's private file system), so your tab stays responsive and memory usage stays flat.
━━━ PRIVACY ━━━
• Zero data collection — no analytics, no telemetry, no accounts
• Everything runs locally in your browser
• No data ever leaves your device
• Full source code available on GitHub
━━━ OPEN SOURCE ━━━
Vidsy is MIT-licensed open source. Contributions, bug reports, and feature requests welcome at:
https://github.com/SM227465/Vidsy
━━━ LIMITATIONS ━━━
• Cannot download DRM-protected content (Netflix, Prime, Disney+, etc.) — this is by design and by law
• Some sites may require sign-in cookies; Vidsy honors your active session
• YouTube adaptive streams: combined 360p/480p/720p itags work via direct path; higher qualities via merged V+ATechnical
