About
Legal Time Tracker is a time recording tool built for lawyers, solicitors, barristers, and legal professionals who need accurate, auditable records of how they spend their time online during client work. Rather than tracking every second of your browsing indefinitely, it works at the session level, you start a session when you begin a matter, it runs in the background logging which websites you visit and for how long, and when you're done you review what was captured before saving it as a billing record. Nothing is stored that you haven't approved. The extension runs entirely inside Chrome's sidebar, sitting alongside your work without opening a separate tab or interrupting your browser. HOW A SESSION WORKS Click Start in the sidebar when you begin working on a matter. The timer runs continuously, recording every website domain you visit for the duration of that session. When you're finished, click End Session, you're taken through a short review where you can assign the session to a client and matter, remove any domains that shouldn't be billed, add notes, and confirm the billing calculation before saving. BILLING & CLIENT MANAGEMENT Clients are created with a default hourly rate, preferred currency, and a billing increment. Four increment options are available, 6-minute (0.1h), 10-minute (0.17h), 15-minute (0.25h), and 1-minute units, reflecting standard legal billing conventions. Each client can hold multiple matters for more granular record-keeping. During a live session, a progress bar shows exactly how far through the current billing increment you are, and the sidebar displays your running billable hours and amount in real time. Switch client, matter, or billing mode at any point mid-session without interrupting the timer. ACCURATE TIME TRACKING ACROSS WINDOWS AND SCREENS The tracker follows your activity across all Chrome windows and monitors. Opening a new tab, switching to a second screen, or moving between browser windows doesn't interrupt or reset the session. The clock only stops when you manually pause it. Idle detection watches for genuine inactivity, if you step away from your desk, domain tracking pauses while the session clock continues. When you return, tracking resumes on whatever tab you're on. The sidebar displays a live status showing whether the session is actively recording, idle, or manually paused. DOMAIN-LEVEL RECORDING, NOT URL LOGGING All tracking happens at the root domain level. Subdomains are stripped automatically, so mail.google.com and docs.google.com both appear simply as google.com. Full page URLs are never stored, only the domain and time spent. Any domain can be added to an ignore list so time spent on social media, news sites, or other non-billable destinations is excluded from your records automatically. SESSION REVIEW AND EDITING After stopping a session, the review screen shows every domain tracked, the time spent on each, and the calculated billable total. Individual domains can be toggled in or out of billing with an immediate recalculation. Notes can be added before saving. Completed sessions can be reopened at any time from history to edit notes, reassign to a different client or matter, adjust which domains are billed, or correct billing details, without affecting the underlying tracked time data. HISTORY AND SEARCH Every completed session is saved locally and accessible from the History tab. A search bar lets you find sessions by client name, matter, notes, or by any domain that appeared in the session. When a search matches a tracked domain, that domain is highlighted on the card so it's clear exactly why the result came up. PDF TIME RECORDS Any session can be exported as a formatted time record showing the date, client, matter, full domain breakdown, billing calculation, and notes. The record opens in a new browser tab where it can be printed or saved as a PDF. No external services are involved. PRIVACY AND DATA All data, session records, client details, billing history, is stored locally in your browser using Chrome's built-in storage. Nothing is sent to any server. No account is required. Uninstalling the extension removes all stored data. DESIGNED FOR Legal professionals who bill by time and need a straightforward, browser-native way to record how they use the web during client work, without manual timers, spreadsheets, or separate software.
