About

Yes, really: a BBS. In your browser. In 2026. You’re allowed to smile.

Remember bulletin boards? Modems, busy signals, ANSI art, and that little jolt when you saw who else was online right now? Afterline is that energy, except you are not hunting down Telnet or dusting off a serial cable. You install an extension, open the side panel, and you are on the board. The old joke is that a BBS is supposed to be a little out of the way. We put this one where you already live on purpose.

What is a BBS?
A Bulletin Board System is how a lot of people hung out online before the web ate the world: dial in, read and post messages, chat, send mail, see who is around. Small, human scale, more neighborhood cork board than infinite feed.

What is Afterline?
Afterline is that idea, delivered as a browser extension. You connect over a persistent session to a real board: see who is online, post on the wall, hang out in the conference room, use message boards and mail, send instant messages with typing indicators, and page the SysOp when you need a hand.

Retro and modern at the same time.
The feel leans retro. You can type like it is 1992. When you want a break, you can click around like a normal person. Same board, two speeds.

What it is not trying to be.
This is not a giant chat app and not an algorithm-driven timeline. It is smaller on purpose: a board, a group of people, and a sysop. Closer to the way early online communities often felt.

Why an extension?
BBSes over Telnet or SSH are a pain to stumble into, and they are lonely unless two people connect at once. Afterline lives in your browser so showing up is lighter and paths cross more often.

Brass tacks.
Afterline BBS is free to use. For privacy, terms, and support, use the links in the extension or visit the site.
