About
Short Description
Organize GitHub stars with fast search, tags, notes, filters, and optional Gist sync.
Detailed Description
Better GitHub Stars Manager turns GitHub's native stars page into a fast, local-first workspace for heavy GitHub users.
If you have hundreds or thousands of starred repositories, GitHub's default stars experience becomes hard to manage. This extension helps you turn a passive bookmark list into a usable library without leaving GitHub.
Key features:
- fast search across repository name, description, topics, and your own notes
- filter by language, tags, and untagged items
- add custom tags and personal notes to starred repositories
- view and edit tags directly on repository pages
- auto-suggest tags from repository topics and language
- incremental sync for newly starred repositories
- full rescan to reconcile unstarred repositories while keeping your annotations
- optional cross-device sync for tags and notes through your own secret GitHub Gist
Why it is different:
- local-first architecture for speed
- no separate account
- no custom backend
- your star metadata stays local
- only your annotation layer is optionally synced through your own GitHub account
How it works:
1. Open the extension Options page
2. Paste a GitHub fine-grained personal access token
3. Visit your GitHub stars page
4. Sync your stars into the local database
5. Search, filter, tag, and annotate repositories
6. Use Push and Pull if you want your annotations to sync across devices
Required GitHub permissions:
- Public repositories (read)
- Gists (read and write) for optional sync
The extension works only with GitHub and GitHub APIs.
Test Instructions
Reviewer setup:
1. Open the extension Options page.
2. Paste a GitHub fine-grained personal access token.
3. Grant Public repositories access.
4. Grant Gists: read and write for full sync testing.
5. Click Save & verify.
6. Open https://github.com/{your-username}?tab=stars
7. Click Sync to import starred repositories.
8. Verify that repositories appear and that search, filters, tags, and notes work.
9. Click Push to create or update the dedicated secret sync Gist.
10. Click Pull to fetch synced annotations back into the local database.
Notes:
- The extension works only on GitHub pages.
- It uses https://github.com/* and https://api.github.com/*.
- Gist sync is optional, but Push and Pull require Gists permission.
- The extension stores star metadata locally and syncs only the annotation layer.Technical
