About

NanoTranslator is a privacy-first translator and writing assistant that runs entirely on your device using Chrome's Built-in AI APIs (Gemini Nano). Your text never leaves your browser — there are no external servers, no API keys, and no telemetry.
                                                                                                      
  KEY FEATURES                                                                                        
  • In-page translation — Select text on any page, press Shift, and the translation appears as a tooltip right next to the selection.                                                                
  • Tools menu — Optionally show a quick menu with Translate, Summarize and Prompt actions instead of translating directly.                                                 
  • Side panel — Longer interactions like rewriting, proofreading, or multi-turn prompting open in a clean side panel without leaving the page.                                                          
  • Multimodal Prompt — Send text plus an optional image to the on-device Prompt API.               
  • Configurable — Choose target language, source-language detection mode (manual or auto), Shift behavior, text tone, and character limit.                                                           
  • Status panel — See which Built-in AI APIs are available on your current Chrome build directly from the popup.                                                                                         
                                                                                                    
  HOW TO USE                                                                                          
  1. Select any text on a webpage.                                                                  
  2. Press Shift to translate it in place.                                                            
  3. To run other tools, open the extension popup or use the side panel.
  4. Open the popup or chrome://extensions → Details → Extension options to change languages and behavior.                                                                                           
                                                                                                      
  REQUIREMENTS                                                                                        
  • Chrome 138 or newer on desktop.                                                                 
  • Built-in AI availability depends on your Chrome version, device hardware, and feature flags. Some models or language packs may need a one-time download before they work offline.                     
  
  PRIVACY                                                                                             
  NanoTranslator does not collect, store, or transmit your selected text or any personal data to any external server. All AI inference runs locally through Chrome's Built-in AI APIs. Settings (language preferences, character limit, etc.) are stored in Chrome's sync storage so they follow your Chrome profile.
