About

Every time you message an AI tool, it uses real electricity and often more than you'd expect. AI Energy Tracker keeps a running estimate of energy consumed across all your AI tools so you can see the real world impact in terms you can easily understand.

Tools it tracks:
- ChatGPT (GPT-4)
- Claude (claude.ai)
- Google Gemini
- Google AI Overviews (AI-generated search results)

What AI Energy Tracker shows you:
Your usage is displayed in watt-hours (Wh) per platform and as a combined total. To make that number meaningful, it's automatically translated into a real-world comparison. For example:
- Under 1 smartphone charge? You'll see what percentage of a charge you've used.
- More than that? It scales up through LED bulb hours, laptop hours, miles of EV driving, and eventually hours or days of powering a home.

Lifetime tracking:
There are two counters. One is a resettable session total (think like a car's trip odometer). There's also a lifetime total that never resets. The lifetime counter also picks up historical messages from conversations you've already had with your tools, so your total reflects as much usage as possible.

Note on estimates:
These are only approximations based on published research, not real-time power measurements. Actual energy use varies by model, query complexity, and data center efficiency. Think of this as a useful order-of-magnitude tracker, not a precise meter.

No account needed. No data collection. Everything stays on your device.
Usage counts are stored locally in your browser using Chrome's built-in storage. Nothing is sent to any server.
