The Brilliant Arowana

The striking fish featured here is an Arowana, likely a Red Arowana (Scleropages formosus), a revered species in Asia known for its beauty and strength. In my decades of studying aquatic life, I have found few species that command the presence of the Arowana. They are a magnificent example of a freshwater predator, with a long, slender body and prominent, upturned mouth.

The Arowana's large, iridescent scales shimmer with a range of colors from fiery reds to deep oranges, a key reason for its high value in the ornamental fish trade. They are native to the rivers and swamps of Southeast Asia and are often considered a symbol of good luck and prosperity. Their powerful, fluid movements as they patrol the upper levels of the water column are a testament to their predatory nature, as they can leap out of the water to catch insects and other small animals.
