Background Quality Saver for YouTube™ automatically reduces video quality when a YouTube watch tab becomes inactive. This helps prevent background videos from using unnecessary data while you listen to music, podcasts, interviews, playlists, or other content.

When you return to the tab, the extension restores the video quality that was selected before the tab became inactive.

Select the video quality used while a YouTube tab is inactive:

• 144p
• 240p
• Lowest available quality

CHOOSE HOW QUALITY CHANGES

Smooth

Waits 5 seconds before lowering quality and requests a gradual transition. Quick tab changes are ignored if you return before the delay ends.

Best for playback continuity. Smooth mode may use slightly more bandwidth than the other modes.

Balanced

Waits 1.5 seconds before lowering quality and uses a gradual transition.

Best for balancing playback continuity with data savings.

Bandwidth Saver

Lowers quality immediately using a more aggressive transition.

Best for minimizing bandwidth usage. YouTube may briefly interrupt playback or audio while changing video streams.

HOW IT WORKS

1. Install and enable the extension.
2. Select the preferred background video quality.
3. Choose Smooth, Balanced, or Bandwidth Saver mode.
4. Use YouTube normally.

When a playing YouTube watch tab becomes inactive, the extension waits for the delay selected by your switching mode and then lowers its video quality.

If you return before the Smooth or Balanced delay finishes, the pending quality change is cancelled. When you return after quality has been lowered, the extension restores the previously selected quality.

IMPORTANT NOTE

YouTube controls the underlying video player and stream transitions. Smooth and Balanced modes are designed to reduce playback disruption, but completely interruption-free quality switching cannot be guaranteed.

This extension does not download videos, block advertisements, access your YouTube account, or modify your account settings.
