About
Permission Trail is the official Chrome extension for permissiontrail.co.uk — a privacy dashboard that shows what data websites store in your browser and gives you clear, practical control over it. 🔍 What Permission Trail Does Permission Trail automatically logs when websites store data in your browser. This includes cookies, local storage, session storage, IndexedDB, Cache Storage, service workers, and form-related data. Instead of this activity happening silently in the background, you can see it clearly in your dashboard. The extension securely syncs this information with your account at permissiontrail.co.uk, where you can view detailed breakdowns of each website’s activity. You’ll see what types of data are being stored, detected trackers, and a calculated trust score that helps you quickly assess behaviour. You can revoke stored data for individual websites or use bulk deletion to remove data across multiple sites at once. This means you no longer have to worry about clicking “accept all” and dealing with the consequences later. Excluded Websites mode allows you to mark sites you trust. These websites will be ignored by tracking and won’t appear in your dashboard, helping you focus only on sites you want to monitor. Your dashboard updates in real time as you browse, so there’s no need to manually refresh or run scans. 🧠 Advanced Analytics (New in v1.5) Version 1.5 introduces Advanced Analytics. You can now view a detailed breakdown of exactly what a website is storing in your browser. This includes deeper visibility into storage contents for users who want more technical insight and transparency. It’s designed to make hidden storage behaviour fully visible and understandable. 🔔 Smart Notification System Permission Trail includes a smart notification system that alerts you when a website stores an unusually large amount of data. These notifications are designed to highlight unexpected or excessive storage activity without overwhelming you. Notification sensitivity can be adjusted in your dashboard, and alerts can be disabled at any time. The system is built to be informative, not intrusive. 💡 Why Use Permission Trail Browsers store data for nearly every website you visit, often without you noticing. Over time, this builds up into persistent tracking and unnecessary stored data. Permission Trail brings transparency by showing what is being stored, where it is stored, and which websites store more data than expected. With exclusions and notifications, your dashboard stays focused and useful without requiring constant manual checking. ⚙️ Requires a Permission Trail Account A free account at permissiontrail.co.uk is required to access the dashboard, manage revokes and bulk deletions, configure excluded websites, adjust notification settings, and review privacy insights across browsing sessions. 🛡️ Privacy-First Design Permission Trail is built with privacy as the priority. Only storage and permission-related data is collected. Browsing history is not tracked. Personal information is not sold or shared. There are no third-party analytics or advertising trackers. Your data remains private and under your control.
