About
Equationeer: Instant Math Explanations for Researchers & Students Struggling to parse a dense equation in a research paper? Equationeer puts a world-class math tutor beside every webpage and PDF you read. Highlight any equation, click Explain, and get a deep, structured breakdown, streamed directly into a clean side panel without ever leaving the page. How it works Select any mathematical expression (LaTeX, Unicode symbols, or mixed notation) and a small "Σ Explain" button appears near your selection. Click it and Equationeer sends the equation, its surrounding context, and the document's content to Claude AI, which returns a richly formatted explanation in seconds. For equations rendered as images (common in PDFs and arXiv papers), activate Screenshot Mode from the toolbar, open the PDF in Chrome, draw a rectangle over the equation, and Claude's vision capabilities will identify and explain it. What you get for every equation? - What This Represents: the big picture in one sentence - Term-by-Term Breakdown: every symbol explained in this specific context, not generically - The Intuition: what the equation actually does, with concrete reasoning - Key Assumptions: what must hold for the equation to be valid - Real-World Analogy: a grounded analogy when it genuinely helps - Related Concepts: 2-3 linked ideas to deepen your understanding Explanation depth (your choice) - 🎓 ELI-Grad: Technical language, no hand-holding - 📐 ELI-Undergrad: Assumes calculus and linear algebra - 💡 ELI-Curious: Intuitive explanations for smart non-specialists More features - Follow-up chat: ask clarifying questions scoped to the equation you just explained - Multi-language responses: get explanations in French, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Chinese, and more - Full history: every explanation saved locally; bookmark, search, and export as JSON or Markdown - Works on local PDFs: open a PDF in Chrome and explain just as you would on any website - Streaming responses: text appears token-by-token for instant perceived performance - Configurable model: choose between Claude Haiku (fast), Sonnet (balanced), and Opus (most powerful); set your preferred response length Privacy & security Your API key is stored exclusively in Chrome's local storage, this is, never synced, never sent anywhere except directly to the Anthropic API. No data is collected, logged, or shared. Equationeer never reads your pages unless you explicitly trigger an explanation. Requirements An Anthropic API key is required (get one at console.anthropic.com). There is no subscription, you pay only for the API calls you make.
