Avoid AI Writing scans whatever you're typing in your browser for 36 categories of patterns that show up in AI-generated text. Hollow intensifiers, chatbot artifacts, formulaic transitions, uniform paragraph lengths, cutoff disclaimers, and the rest.

Everything runs locally. The extension does not transmit, log, or store your text on any server. No account. No sign-in. No tracking.

What it catches

- Tier 1 AI vocabulary: "delve," "tapestry," "paradigm," "seamless," "robust," "comprehensive," and 40+ more.
- Chatbot artifacts: "I hope this helps," "Great question!," "Let me know if you need anything else."
- Reasoning-chain leaks: "Let me think step by step," "Breaking this down," "To approach this systematically."
- Sycophantic tone, hollow intensifiers, emotional flatline, novelty inflation, false concessions, vague attributions, cutoff disclaimers, and 20+ other categories.
- Structural patterns: em-dash overuse, uniform sentence length, bold overuse, rhythm uniformity.

How you use it

- Focus any text field on any site. A small scan button appears at the top-right of the field.
- Click it (or press Alt+Shift+A) and the extension scores the text from 0-100, breaks it down by category, and suggests replacements for each flagged phrase.
- Or use the extension popup to paste text and scan it directly.
- Every issue is tagged P0 (chatbot leakage) through P3 (stylistic) so you know what to fix first.

What's under the hood

- 36 pattern categories, a 109-word replacement table, and tier-based scoring (tier 1: always flag; tier 2: flag on paragraph clustering; tier 3: flag by density).
- Shadow-DOM isolated UI. The extension's styles never bleed into the page you're on.
- Manifest V3, service worker, no remote code.

What it does not do

- No text is ever sent to a server. The only exception is the optional "Run a deep audit & rewrite the text" button. When you click that button, the extension writes your text to chrome.storage.session locally and opens a new tab to avoidaiwriting.com, which reads the text via a same-origin postMessage from the extension's content script. The text never appears in the URL or in any server's access logs.
- No usage telemetry. No analytics. No ads.
- Not active on banking, password-manager, or authentication pages. Those origins are explicitly excluded from the content-script match list.

Free forever

The extension is free with no usage limits. The optional Claude-powered deep audit runs on the companion web app and costs a few cents per run via a $avoid burn or a credit pack.

Source code

Repo is private. Approach for submission: ship the zip with readable source (unminified JS, no bundler output — the extension/ directory contains plain source). In the submission notes, point reviewers to the unminified source in the uploaded zip and offer read-only GitHub collaborator access if they request it.
