SustAIn (short for Sustainable AI) is a pioneering Chrome extension designed to bring sustainability transparency to AI usage on the web. It is the first of its kind to estimate and display real-time environmental metrics — such as carbon emissions and energy efficiency — directly within the browser, precisely at the point where users interact with AI-powered services. Whether you're chatting with a generative model, using an AI content generator, or analyzing data with smart tools, SustAIn helps users visualize the environmental impact of each action and encourages more mindful digital behavior.

Unlike existing browser add-ons focused solely on privacy, performance, or user experience, SustAIn introduces an entirely new category: Digital Sustainability Metrics. With the world moving toward carbon neutrality and green technology, SustAIn fills a critical gap by offering users and developers an easy, transparent way to track and reduce their AI-related carbon footprint.

How It Works
SustAIn operates silently in the background until it detects interactions with AI services. Once a query is submitted and the action icon is pressed, the extension triggers a lightweight backend process involving a custom-trained machine learning model hosted on Google Cloud Vertex AI. This model classifies the type of AI interaction, estimates the compute complexity, and, using real-time APIs for electricity data, geolocation, and data center power usage effectiveness (PUE), delivers accurate environmental metrics in milliseconds.

The extension overlays these metrics non-intrusively on the page, ensuring the user experience is not disrupted. Users can quickly learn how much electricity was consumed, the estimated carbon emitted, and the relative efficiency of the AI service they're using.

Built with Responsibility
SustAIn is developed with a strong ethical foundation. We chose not to rely on large foundation models or commercial LLMs within our stack. Instead, we built and trained a small-scale classifier model to ensure minimal compute usage and lower emissions from the extension itself. This principle of "building sustainably to measure sustainability" is core to our project ethos.

All data is processed with privacy in mind — no personal data is collected, stored, or shared. The APIs used are purposefully lightweight and focused only on environmental context like IP region, electricity grid data, and timestamp-based efficiency metrics.
