About

Privacy Shield for WhatsApp Web hides what's on your screen from people sitting next to you — without making WhatsApp harder to use.

Open WhatsApp Web in a coffee shop, on a plane, in an open-plan office, on a screen share, or next to a curious co-worker, and the same problem comes up: your messages are readable from
across the room. Privacy Shield fixes that with two tools: a one-key password lock, and selective blur on the parts of the interface that leak the most information.

  WHAT IT DOES

  • Password lock — Press Alt+X to instantly cover WhatsApp Web with a lock screen. Type your password to unlock and continue. Your password is hashed locally on your device and never sent
   anywhere.

  • Selective blur — Independently blur the parts of WhatsApp that show sensitive content: incoming messages, contact names, profile pictures, the chat-list preview, the message input box,
and media (photos, videos, stickers, documents). Turn on only what you need.

  • Hover to reveal — Move your mouse over any blurred element to temporarily reveal it. No clicks, no toggles. The blur returns the moment you move away.

  • Adjustable intensity — Choose how strong the blur is, from a light fog (4 pixels) to fully unreadable (20 pixels).

  • Auto-lock — Optional: lock automatically after a period of inactivity, so a forgotten browser tab doesn't stay readable.

  • Quick toggle — Alt+Z turns all blurs on or off in one keystroke. Perfect when someone walks up to your screen, or when you need a clear view for a screen recording.

  • Side panel UI — All settings live in a side panel that stays open next to WhatsApp Web. No popup that closes the moment you click back into your chat list.

PRIVACY FIRST

Your messages never leave your computer. The extension reads page elements only to apply a CSS blur effect — message content is never copied into JavaScript variables, never sent to any server, never stored. The extension has no access to any website other than web.whatsapp.com.
