Glimpsed in this beautiful forest setting are a pair of Northern Cardinals (Cardinalis cardinalis), illustrating a classic moment of social interaction, likely courtship or a mate-feeding ritual. The male, on the left, is an arresting sight, his plumage a magnificent, saturated scarlet from his crest to his tail, contrasting dramatically with the distinctive black mask covering his face and throat. He holds a small cluster of red berries and green leaves in his conical, bright orange-red beak, presenting it to the slightly duller, yet still richly colored female on the right.
